Religious Education for Children and Youth

Our Goals

The Religious Education (RE) program of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waynesboro aims to

  • Make children and youth feel warmly welcomed and appreciated
  • Provide a place for children to ask and answer some of their own spiritual questions
  • Provide the opportunity to learn about Unitarian Universalism and other religions
  • Encourage spiritual growth and create experiences that enhance a child's sense of wonder and awe
  • Model a sense of community where peace, respect, and justice prevail
Fran Clark, Director of Religious Education

Our Schedule

Infants and toddlers: For children two and under, childcare is provided in the nursery on the 2nd floor of the RE house during the Sunday Service at 11 a.m.

Children (3-12 years old):From September through May, RE classes for children coincide with Sunday services. Children typically arrive between 10:45 and 10:55 a.m. and gather in the main meeting room of the RE house.

Teens: Teens go directly to the teen room on the second floor of the RE house by 11:00 a.m.

Intergenerational services: During intergenerational services held throughout the year, children three and up attend with their parents. A notice is posted on the RE house door for these services.

Summer RE: From June through August, RE is offered at 10:00 a.m.

Visitors are always welcome. For children attending RE for the first time, parents are encouraged to arrive 10-15 minutes early to help them get settled in the RE program.

Our Curriculum

We are Many We Are One (for children age three to Kindergarten): This curriculum encourages children to use their minds, bodies, and emotions to develop their sense of identity within their UU community and their world.

Spirit of Adventure (for children in grades 1-6): "What no more gold sprayed macaroni verses!" That's right. This curriculum teaches UU identity without the usual humdrum craft projects and takes a new approach to teaching children who we are as UUs. Using famous people who exemplify UU identity, lessons are hands-on and fun.

Traditions with a Wink (for teens): This curriculum teaches teens an understanding of UU faith that can replace the vague "anything we want to" statement with "We come from a long tradition of questioning, searching, loving and kindness."
