Religious Education

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waynesboro offers religious education programs for children and adults.

Children’s Religious Education (RE)

Children attend RE each Sunday while their parents attend services.  RE classes are held in the RE
Building next door to the Fellowship Hall. RE is held weekly except for several times during the year
when children attend services with their families at our intergenerational services.
During the summer, RE is offered for all ages together.

Goals for Children’s RE are to:

  • Make children and youth feel warmly welcomed and appreciated
  • Provide a place for children to ask and answer some of their own spiritual questions
  • Provide the opportunity to learn about Unitarian Universalism and other religions
  • Encourage spiritual growth and create experiences that enhance a child's sense of wonder and awe
  • Model a sense of community where peace, respect, and justice prevail

Parents now bring their children to service.  Children will attend the first 10-15 mins of service and then leave with their RE teachers to head to the RE building.
Infants and toddlers are cared for in the nursery by a staff member or volunteer.
Classes are now divided into the following age groups:
PreK/Kindergarten and Early Elementary (grades K-3), Upper Elementary/Middle School (grades 4-6).
Teens (grades 7-12) gather for RE in the teen room.

Religious education classes follow age-appropriate curricula chosen by the RE committee.
Using the selected curriculum, UUFW members volunteer to lead RE classes for a scheduled
session which usually runs for 6 weeks.

Announcements

NOTE: Our RE classes are taught by volunteers from our Fellowship. In order to continue having RE we need everyone's help, no previous experience as a teacher is needed.  A well put together curricula is provided for you to follow or as a guide.  If you can't volunteer for an entire session please consider volunteering as an assistant. As an assistant you can sign up for any Sunday that you are available.

If you have any questions about the 2012 RE program please contact Fran Clark; email at Frnclar@aol.com or call 241-4754.

Adult Religious Education

UUFW members come together in many different ways to explore their spirituality,
pursue emotional and intellectual growth, and learn new skills. Some classes, like
the Newcomer’s Seminar, are led by Rev. Ed Piper. Other programs like the
Women’s Spirituality Group
known as Sophia’s Daughters) and the UUFW Men’s Group
are organized and led by members. Regularly scheduled classes and workshops,
many open to the general public, are held on topics ranging from end of life planning to stained glass making.

New Adult RE class for 2012

The Adult Religious Education Class  has been changed to "The Pursuit of Happiness" – starting Wednesday, January 11, 7:00 p.m. Ed Piper will  lead this class based on Jonathan Haidt's book, The Happiness Hypothesis. Folks who attend this first session will decide about the scheduling of future sessions. The World Religious class previously scheduled for this time will be rescheduled later in the spring.
