Social Action
The commitment of our Fellowship to
social action is grounded in the Unitarian Universalist principles
that affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person; promote
justice, equity, and compassion in human relations; and strive
for the achievement of world community with peace, liberty, and
justice for all people. The Social Action Committee takes a leadership
role in identifying issues of importance to our congregation and
in organizing its response. These issues vary from year to year
and may be local, national, or international in scope. Current
and recent projects include:
|
- Augusta Free Clinic: Once
a year the UUFW provides a meal for clinic volunteers.
- Casa de la Amistad:
UUFW members volunteer as tutors for Hispanic children
in the Waynesboro community.
- Crop Walk: UUFW members
participate in and contribute to this local annual fund-raiser
to combat world hunger.

the UUFW purchases Fair Trade coffee to serve at all Fellowship
events. Individual members may also purchase Fair Trade coffee
through the UUFW for personal use.
- Grenada Relief: The UUFW organized
a special collection of goods and funds to help victims of the
2004 hurricane in Grenada.
- Guest at Your Table: Each
year the UUFW participates in the Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee's annual campaign to help people from around the world
who need our support in their struggle for basic human rights.
- Heifer International: As a
special project for 2004-2005, the UUFW is planning creative
fund raising activities to support the purchase of a dairy cow
through Heifer International With a gift of Heifer livestock
and training in environmentally sound farming methods, the UUFW
will not only help hungry people obtain a sustainable source
of food, and income, but will also promote strong communities,
environmental protection and peace.
- Monthly Collection On one
Sunday each month the UUFW takes a special collection for a
charitable organization identified by the Social Action Committee.
Past recipients, to name just a few, include the Blue Ridge
Area Food Bank which combats hunger, CASA which advocates for
children within the legal system, New Directions which works
to end domestic violence, and Rebuilding Together which repairs
homes for people in need.
- Sunday Services: In order
to highlight social justice issues, the Social Action Committee
plans and carries out two Sunday services each year.
